Public Walk: Comox-Helmcken Greenway June 29

The City is accepting feedback on the road construction of the long-awaited Comox-Helmcken Greenway.

WERA is hosting a public walk of the Greenway on June 29th. We’ll get started at 11:00 am from the corner of Comox & Chilco. A City Engineer will join us to answer our questions about the construction efforts. Everyone is welcome!

With leadership from the Mount Pleasant and Gordon Neighbourhood Houses and the Recycling Council of BC, this is your chance to make a difference!

Laneway Walkshops: March 22 & 23

These walkshops are part of the West End Community Plan

Laneway “Walkshops”

Attend a “walkshop” and think about how West End laneways could be used in the future, including surface and landscaping treatments, pedestrian facilities, benches, lighting, traffic calming, parking, and infill housing possibilities. Learn about the history and character of the laneways, and observe and discuss how we design these places. The walk will be followed by a workshop where you can share your ideas for laneway improvements.

WERA in the News: XtraWest

WERA President, Christine Ackermann, is quoted in this March 4th XtraWest story about the West End Community Plan process:

“I think it’s important to get involved and engaged with city planning for the West End,” says West End Residents Association (WERA) president Christine Ackermann, who attended the session. “Housing, in particular, is such an important issue. It’s good to have diversity at the table.”

But Ackermann says she is aware of community concerns regarding the planning process.

“I have heard [from the community] that the process is very rushed,” she says. “That doesn’t mean that they’re not doing a good job. It’s just difficult with the timeline. Less time for a community means less outreach to the community.”

City Living Room project: March 11

Hello there,

I’m designing a new kind of mobile library for Vancouver parks and orphaned spaces and I need your help!

The City Living Room is a pilot project expected to launch late this summer in the West End. It’s about recreating the library as a “third place”, or a comfortable public place that fosters informal community interaction. The library collection will change according to community input and interest.

What would you like to see in your neighbourhood park?  Would you like a workshop on how to grow a vegetable garden? Or are you interested in string theory or motorcycles? Would you like workshops, community conversations, screenings?

Join the conversation at the Roundhouse Community Centre on Monday, March 11th from 6-8PM.

RSVP at:

Katie Mah

I’m a 4th year Emily Carr design student and this is my graduation project. Vancouver Public Library is prepared to supply materials and support. Supported by Vancouver Public Library, the West End Community Planning Team, and the Vancouver Foundation Small Neighbourhood Grant

Feel free to pass this on to whoever you think might be interested!

Walkshops Invitation: Community Plan

What follows is a message from the West End Community Plan city staff.

West-End-Community-Plan-WALWest End Commercial Streets “Walkshops”

The West End’s four commercial streets (Davie, Denman, Robson and Alberni Streets) are part of the community planning process.

We invite you to attend a “walkshop” where we will encourage you to think about the way we design buildings, sidewalks, roads, landscaping, street furniture, signage, weather protection, patios, and other elements that make up a vibrant, active and viable commercial street. You will have an opportunity to learn about the history and character of these streets, and to observe and discuss how we design these important community places. The walk will be followed by a two-hour facilitated workshop intended to allow participants an opportunity to share what they think is working, and also where there are opportunities for improvements.
