With growing concern about the renewal of St. Paul’s Hospital this week Councilor Geoff Meggs is going to move a motion that will add the City of Vancouver’s voice in requesting the Provincial Government fulfill its commitment to renew St. Paul’s Hospital.
On October 1, 2008 136 doctors of St. Paul’s Hospital wrote a letter to the Premier of B.C. expressing their concern on the lack of progress on the renewal of the hospital. The renewal of St. Paul’s Hospital is called the “Legacy Project” by Providence Health Care, the not for profit faith based corporation that owns and operates St. Paul Hospital. The Legacy Project was announced in 2002 and was a vision of renewal on its current downtown location.

Despite recent investments into St Paul's Hospital from the public, non-profit and private sectors, there is no assurance from either the Ministry of Health or Providence Health Care, the Catholic organization that operates St Paul's, that the hospital will remain downtown.
At an Oct 16 press conference, Pfizer Canada, Simon Fraser University, and BC's Heart and Stroke Foundation announced an investment of nearly $8 million towards cardiovascular research and rapid blood screening tests for HIV patients at St Paul's.
The money is going towards research, not into capital redevelopment for buildings, according to Providence president Dianne Doyle.
“We know that the state of our buildings at St Paul's Hospital are such that we can't provide the kind of care that we think our patients, families and staff deserve because the buildings are old, some are over 100 years old,” she says.

Health Minister George Abbott yesterday made a surprise announcement of an investment $1.2 million for a fast-track emergency room at Vancouver’s St. Paul's Hospital. Despite Providence Heath Care wanting to move the hospital to another location the Government invest in the Burrard Street Location. When asked about PHC scheme to move the hospital to another location George Abbott stated: ” I don’t think it’s something that’s going to happen quickly. We’re probably talking a project that would be a billion dollars plus.”
John Bermingham quoted chair of the Save St. Paul’s coalition, Aaron Jasper, in the Province newspaper today saying: “We need a full emergency ward in the downtown core, not just an urgent-care centre. Those essential services need to stay.
